Most industrial work environments are not exactly the safest places in the world to work in. Workers in locations like construction, roadwork, mines, airports, or any outdoor jobs are prone to many hazards, which include falling debris, moving parts, working from scaffolding, tripping risks, and the like (ouch!)
For this reason, high-visibility (or hi-vis) gear has become an essential part of the work site’s safety regimen.
What is Hi-Vis Clothing?
Hi-vis clothing is an apparel or gear made of fluorescent material, usually built with reflectorised tapes or shapes to make the wearer stand out, especially during night time or in poor lighting conditions. In the dark, any alternative light source will react with the hi-vis material and make it glow. The same happens during daytime; the brightly coloured material absorbs UV rays from the sun and re-emits longer-wave light.
Importance of Hi-Vis Clothing
- For safety
Hi-vis clothing minimises the risks of accidents, injuries, or worse, fatalities in industry work environments. The safety gear is not just for the workers; even site visitors can be asked to wear hi-vis clothing for safety measures.
This type of clothing can also provide protection for cyclists, motor cyclists, runners or even children to increase visibility when they are outdoors, especially during night time. Other people who wear hi-vis clothing include policemen, bus and cab drivers, traffic officials, car park attendants and stadium stewards.
2. Meet statutory obligations
The Work Health and Safety Regulations require businesses in certain circumstances to observe proper risk control measures. The use of personal protective equipment or PPE is one of the requirements, and hi-vis clothing belongs in this category, as with boots, hard hats, goggles, safety harnesses, and others protective wear.
According to WHS laws, the protective gear should specifically minimize health and safety risks should be suitable for the nature of work or hazards involved, should be well maintained, repaired or replaced if needed, and should be worn by the worker.
3. Improve employee productivity
With proper gear, workers will feel that their safety and health are not at risk, and this, in turn, will boost their morale and improve productivity levels.
Wearing Hi-Vis Clothing
Some workers may find hi-vis gear too hot and uncomfortable, especially during warmer conditions. But there are comfortable and wearable alternatives that are made to suit different weather conditions.
We have a range of hi-vis workwear that is comfortable while still providing the reflectorised safety workers need, such as hi-vis polos, long sleeve and short sleeve shirts, soft shell jackets, singlets, hoodies and overalls. Apart from visibility in work environments, hi-vis garments can also be personalised with an embroidered logo to provide increased visibility to your brand.
